평안의 매는 줄
의견이 다른 어떤 일로 친구에게 이메일을 보내 따졌는데 그 친구에게서 아무 대꾸가 없었습니다. 내가 지나쳤던 것일까요? 친구를 계속 다그쳐서 상황을 더 악화시키고 싶지는 않았지만, 그녀가 해외여행을 떠날 때까지 문제를 해결하지 않은 채 내버려두고 싶지도 않았습니다. 그 후 며칠 동안 친구가 생각날 때마다, 앞으로 어떻게 해야 할지는 몰랐지만 그녀를 위해 기도했습니다. 그러던 어느 날 아침 근처 공원에서 산책할 때 나와 마주치자 고통스러운 표정을 짓는 그녀를 보았습니다. 나는 “주님, 친구와 대화할 수 있게 하셔서 감사합니다.” 하면서 심호흡을 하고 반가운 얼굴로 그녀에게 다가갔습니다. 우리는 솔직하게 대화를 나눈 후 문제를 해결할 수 있었습니다.
때로는 상처나 침묵으로 관계가 악화되어 악화된 관계를 극복할 수 없는 지경에 이르기도 합니다. 그러나 바울 사도가 에베소교회에 보낸 서신에서와 같이, 하나님께서 관계를 회복시켜주시기를 간구할 때 우리는 부르심을 받은 대로 온유와 겸손과 오래 참음으로 옷 입고 성령의 도우심으로 화목과 하나 됨을 위해 힘써야 합니다. 하나님은 우리가 하나 되기를 바라십니다. 하나님은 때로는 우리가 공원을 산책할 때 성령을 통해 생각지도 않게 주님의 사람들을 만나게 해주십니다.

The Bond of Peace
After I confronted my friend by email over a matter on which we had differed, she didn’t respond. Had I over- stepped? I didn’t want to worsen the situation by pestering her, but neither did I want to leave things unresolved before she went on a trip overseas. As she popped into my mind throughout the following days, I prayed for her, unsure of the way forward. Then one morning I went for a walk in our local park and saw her, pain etched on her face as she glimpsed me. “Thank you, Lord, that I can talk to her,” I breathed as I approached her with a welcoming smile. We talked openly and were able to resolve matters.
Sometimes when hurt or silence intrudes on our relationships, mending them seems out of our control. But as the apostle Paul says in his letter to the church at Ephesus, we are called to work for peace and unity through God’s Spirit, donning the garments of gentleness, humility, and patience as we seek God’s healing in our relationships. The Lord yearns for us to be united, and through His Spirit He can bring His people together—even unexpectedly when we go walking in the park. - AMY BOUCHER PYE
