1915년 10월, 제1차 세계대전 중에 오스왈드 챔버스는 영연방 군인들을 위한 YMCA 군목으로 복무하기 위해 이집트 카이로 가까이에 위치한 군 훈련소인 짜이퉁 캠프에 도착했습니다. 그가 주중 특별 예배가 있음을 알리자, “기도의 이점이 무엇인가?”라는 제목의 챔버스의 설교를 듣기 위해 400명의 군인들이 커다란 YMCA 건물을 가득 채웠습니다. 이후 전쟁 중에 하나님을 찾으려하는 사람들과 개별적으로 이야기할때, 오스왈드는 누가복음 11장 13절을 자주 인용했습니다. “너희가 악할지라도 좋은 것을 자식에게 줄줄 알거든 하물며 너희 하늘 아버지께서 구하는 자에게 성령을 주시지 않겠느냐 하시니라.”
하나님의 아들 예수님을 통해 값없이 주시는 하나님의 선물은 용서와 소망, 그리고 성령님을 통해 우리의 삶 속에 사시는 하나님입니다. “구하는 이마다 받을 것이요 찾는 이는 찾아낼 것이요 두드리는 이에게는 열릴 것이니라”(10절).
1917년 11월 15일에 오스왈드 챔버스는 맹장파열로 예기치 않게 사망했습니다. 오스왈드로 인해 그리스도를 믿게 된 한 병사가 그를 기리기 위해 누가복음 11장 13절 구절이 새겨진 대리석 조각을 구입하여 그의 무덤 옆에 놓았습니다. “하물며 너희 하늘 아버지께서 구하는 자에게 성령을 주시지 않겠느냐.” 이 놀라운 하나님의 선물은 오늘날 우리 모두에게도 다 주어집니다.

하나님 아버지, 하나님은 모든 좋은 선물을 주시는 분입니다. 오늘 우리 안에 사시고 우리를 주님의 진리로 인도하시는 성령님의 큰 선물에 감사드립니다.
하나님의 선물인 성령님께서 오늘도 우리 각자의 삶에 들어와 사신다.

How Much More!
In October 1915, during World War I, Oswald Chambers arrived at Zeitoun Camp, a military training center near Cairo, Egypt, to serve as a YMCA chaplain to British Commonwealth soldiers. When he announced a weeknight religious service, 400 men packed the large YMCA hut to hear Chambers’s talk titled, “What Is the Good of Prayer?” Later, when he spoke individually with men who were trying to find God in the midst of war, Oswald often quoted Luke 11:13, “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
The free gift of God through His Son, Jesus, is forgiveness, hope, and His living presence in our lives through the Holy Spirit. “For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened” (V. 10).
On November 15, 1917, Oswald Chambers died unexpectedly from a ruptured appendix. To honor him, a soldier led to faith in Christ by Oswald purchased a marble carving of a Bible with the message of Luke 11:13 on its open page and placed it beside his grave: “How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” This amazing gift from God is available to each of us today. - DAVID MCCASLAND
