약속, 또 약속
막내딸과 나는 “꼬집기”라고 부르는 놀이를 합니다. 딸이 계단 위로 도망칠 때면 쫓아가 살짝 꼬집기를 시도합니다. 놀이의 규칙은 딸이 계단 위에 있을 때만 꼬집을 수 있다는 것입니다.(물론 살짝!). 일단 계단 꼭대기에 이르면 딸은 안전합니다. 하지만 때때로 딸이 놀이할 기분이 아닐 때가 있습니다. 그럴 때 내가 계단을 쫓아 올라가면 딸은 단호하게 “꼬집기 안 해!” 라고 말합니다. 그러면 나는 “그래, 꼬집기 안 할게. ‘약속해.’”라고 답합니다.
물론 그런 약속이 별 것 아닌 것처럼 여겨질지 모릅니다. 그러나 내가 말한 것을 지킬 때 딸은 내 성품의 한 부분을 이해하기 시작합니다. 딸은 나의 일관됨을 경험합니다. 딸은 내가 한 말을 지켜서 나를 믿을 수 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 그런 약속을 지키는 것은 아주 작은 일입니다. 그러나 약속, 더 정확히는 그 약속을 지키는 것은 관계를 서로 이어주는 접착제입니다. 그것이 사랑과 신뢰의 기반이 됩니다.
나는 베드로가 하나님의 약속으로 말미암아 우리가 “신성한 성품에 참여하게”(베드로후서 1:4) 된다고 한 것도 바로 같은 의미라고 생각합니다. 우리는 하나님께서 그분 자신과 우리에 관해 말씀하신 것을 신뢰하여 하나님의 말씀을 있는 그대로 받아들일 때, 우리를 향한 그분의 마음을 접하게 됩니다. 주님의 말씀이 사실임을 믿을 때, 주님은 주님의 신실하심을 보여주십니다. 나는 성경이 다음과 같은 구체적인 주님의 약속으로 가득한 것에 감사합니다. “여호와의 인자와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로 우리가 진멸되지 아니함이니이다 이것들이 아침마다 새로우니 주의 성실하심이 크시도소이다”(예레미야애가 3:22-23).
이로써 그 보배롭고 지극히 큰 약속을 우리 에게 주사 이 약속으로 말미암아……신성한 성품에 참여하는 자가 되게 하려 하셨느니라

주님, 주님의 “위대하고 고귀한 약속”에 무한 감사합니다. 주님의 말씀이 진리임을 깨달고 그 안에서 안식하도록 도와주소서. 그리하여 주님의 다정한 선하심을 온전히 경험하게 하소서.
우리에게 하시는 하나님의 말씀은 우리를 향한 주님의 마음을 드러낸다.

Promises, Promises
My youngest daughter and I have a game we call “Pinchers.” When she goes up the stairs, I’ll chase her and try to give her a little pinch. The rules are that I can only pinch her (gently, of course!) when she’s on the stairs. Once she’s at the top, she’s safe. Sometimes, though, she’s not in the mood to play. And if I follow her up the stairs, she’ll sternly say, “No pinchers!” I’ll respond, “No pinchers. I promise .”
Now, that promise may seem a little thing. But when I do what I say, my daughter begins to understand something of my character. She experiences my consistency. She knows my word is good, that she can trust me. It’s a little thing, keeping such a promise. But promises—or, keeping them, I should say—are the glue of relationships. They lay a foundation of love and trust.
I think that's what Peter meant when he wrote that God’s promises enable us to “participate in the divine nature” (2 PETER 1:4).
When we take God at His Word, trusting what He says about Himself and about us, we encounter His heart toward us. It gives Him an opportunity to reveal His faithfulness as we rest in what He says is true. I'm thankful Scripture brims with His promises, these concrete reminders that “his compassions never fail. They are new every morning” (LAMENTATIONS 3:22–23). ADAM HOLZ
