가장 위대한 구조임무
1952년 2월 18일, 매사추세츠 해안에서 약 10마일(약 16 킬로미터) 떨어진 곳에서 유조선 팬들턴 함이 거대한 태풍 때문에 두 동강이 났습니다. 40명이 넘는 선원들이 거센 바람과 맹렬한 파도 속에 가라앉고 있는 배의 뒤편에 갇혔습니다.
재난 소식이 매사추세츠주 채텀에 있는 해안경비대에 알려지자 갑판장 1등 부관 버니 웨버가 다른 세 명과 함께 구명정에 올라 거의 불가능해 보이는 구조임무에 나서서, 죽음에 직면해 있던 32명의 선원을 안전하게 구조했습니다. 그들의 용기 있는 업적은 미국 해안경비대 역사상 가장 위대한 구조작업 중의 하나로 평가되었고, 2016 년의 영화 ‘더 파이니스트 아워스’의 소재가 되었습니다.
누가복음 19장 10절에서 예수님은 자신의 구조사명을 이렇게 선포하셨습니다. “인자가 온 것은 잃어버린 자를 찾아 구원하려 함이니라.” 십자가와 부활은 그 구조작업의 궁극적인 표현입니다. 예수님께서 몸소 우리의 죄를 담당하시고 주님을 믿는 모든 자들을 하나님 아버지께로 회복시키셨습니다. 2천년 간 사람들은 주님을 받아들여 현재의 풍성한 삶과 다가올 영원한 삶을 누리고 있습니다. ‘구조된’ 것이지요!
예수님을 따르는 우리에게는 성령님의 도우심으로 우리 구주와 함께 모든 사람을 구조하는 가장 위대한 사명을 감당하는 특권이 주어졌습니다. 당신의 삶 속에서 구조하시는 그분의 사랑이 필요한 사람이 누구입니까?

The Greatest Rescue Mission
On February 18, 1952, a massive storm split the SS Pendleton, a tanker ship, into two pieces about ten miles off the Massachusetts coast. More than forty sailors were trapped inside the ship’s sinking stern in the midst of fierce winds and violent waves.
When word of the disaster reached the Coast Guard station in Chatham, Massachusetts, Boatswain’s Mate First Class Bernie Webber took three men on a lifeboat to try to save the stranded crew against nearly impossible odds and brought thirty-two of the seemingly doomed sailors to safety. Their courageous feat was deemed one of the greatest rescues in United States Coast Guard history and was the subject of the 2016 film The Finest Hours.
In Luke 19:10, Jesus declared His own rescue mission: “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” The cross and the resurrection became the ultimate expression of rescue, as Jesus took on Himself our sins and restored to the Father all who trust Him. For 2,000 years, people have embraced His offer of abundant life now and eternal life with Him. Rescued!
As followers of Jesus we have the privilege, with the Holy Spirit’s help, to join our Savior in the greatest rescue mission of all. Who in your life needs His rescuing love? - BILL CROWDER
