작은 낙원

서재에서 열린 창밖을 바라보면 새들의 지저귀는 소리가 들리고, 바람 소리와 함께 나무 사이로 살랑대는 바람이 보입니다. 이웃의 새로 경작된 밭에 가지런히 묶여 있는 짚 더미와 커다랗고 새하얀 뭉게구름이 눈부시게 파란 하늘에 대조해 아름답게 드러나 보입니다.

나는 지금 하나의 작은 낙원을 즐기고 있습니다. 집 앞을 지나는 자동차들의 그칠줄 모르는 소음과 가벼운 허리 통증만 없다면 말입니다. 한때는 이 세상이 완전히 좋은 곳이었기 때문에 ‘낙원’이라는 말을 쉽게 쓰고 있지만, 이젠 더 이상 그런 곳이 아닙니다. 인간이 죄를 지었을 때 에덴동산에서 쫓겨났고 땅은 ‘저주’를 받았습니다(창세기 3장 참조). 그때부터 이 땅과 이곳에 있는 모든 것들은 ‘쇠락의 굴레’에 놓이게 되었습니다. 고통과 질병과 우리의 죽음은 모두 다 인간이 죄에 빠진 결과입니다(로마서 8:18-23).

그러나 하나님은 만물을 새롭게 하십니다. 때가 되면 하나님의 처소가 회복되어 새로워진 모습으로 주의 백성 가운데 있게 될 것입니다. 그곳은 “사망이 없고 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 아니하고 처음 것들이 다 지나간”(요한계시록 21:1-4) “새 하늘과 새 땅” 입니다. 그날이 올 때까지 우리는 아름다운 장면들과 때로는 넓게 펼쳐진 세상의 숨 막히는 장관을 보고 즐거워할 수 있습니다. 이는 다가올 “낙원”을 조금이나마 미리 맛보는 것입니다.

A Little Bit of Paradise

Gazing out my open study window, I hear birds chirping and hear and see the wind gently blowing in the trees. Bales of hay dot my neighbor’s newly tilled field, and large, white cumulus clouds stand out in contrast to the brilliant blue sky.

I’m enjoying a little bit of paradise—except for the almost incessant noise of the traffic that runs past our property and the slight ache in my back. I use the word paradise lightly because though our world was once completely good, it no longer is. When humanity sinned, we were expelled from the garden of Eden and the ground was “cursed” (SEE GEN. 3). Since then the Earth and everything in it has been in “bondage to decay.” Suffering, disease, and our deaths are all a result of human-kind’s fall into sin (ROM. 8:18–23).

Yet God is making everything new. One day His dwelling place will be among His people in a renewed and restored creation—“a new heaven and a new earth”—where “there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (REV. 21:1–4). Until that day we can enjoy the bright splashes and sometimes wide expanses of breathtaking beauty we see around us in this world, which is just a small foretaste of the “paradise” that will be. - ALYSON KIEDA

능력으로 나아가는 발걸음

“뱀이 나오지 않을까요?”

이웃집 아이 앨런과 함께 집 근처의 강가를 걸으려 할 때 그가 물었습니다.

나는 “한 번도 뱀을 본 적은 없지만 정말 그럴 수도 있겠네. 하나님께 안전히 지켜달라고 기도하자.”라고 말하고는 잠시 서서 함께 기도한 후 계속 걸었습니다.

몇 분이 지난 후 아내 캐리가 갑자기 뒤로 물러서며 앞에 똬리를 틀고 있는 독사를 가까스로 피했습니다. 우리는 거리를 두고 독사가 길에서 사라질 때까지 기다렸습니다. 그리고 우리가 무사한 것에 안도하며 하나님께 감사드렸습니다. 나는 하나님께서 앨런의 질문을 통해 뱀이 나올 것에 대비하게 하신 것과 우리의 기도에 응답하여 보살피셨다는 것을 믿어 의심치 않습니다.

그날 저녁 위험했던 순간을 겪고나니, “여호와와 그의 능력을 구할지어다 항상 그의 얼굴을 찾을지어다”(역대상 16:11)라고 한 다윗의 말이 중요하게 느껴집니다. 이 말씀은 여호와의 언약궤가 예루살렘으로 돌아온 것을 찬양하는 시편의 한 구절이기도 합니다. 이 말씀은 이스라엘의 고난의 역사 가운데 그의 백성들을 향한 하나님의 신실하심을 알려주며, 하나님을 늘 찬양하고 하나님께 “부르짖을” 것을 일깨워주고 있습니다(35절).

“[하나님의] 얼굴을 찾으라”는 것이 무슨 뜻일까요? 그것은 별일 없는 아주 일상적인 순간에도 우리의 마음을 하나님께로 향하라는 뜻입니다. 때로 우리의 기도가 구한 것과는 다르게 응답될 수도 있지만, 하나님은 어떤 경우에도 신실하신 분이십니다. 선한 목자 되시는 주님께서 우리를 인도하시고 그분의 자비와 능력과 사랑으로 돌보아주십니다. 우리 모두 하나님을 의지한다고 고백할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Stepping into Strength

“Will we see any snakes?”

Allan, a young boy in our neighborhood, asked that question as we started on a hike by the river near our home.

“We never have before,” I answered, “but we might! So let’s ask God to keep us safe.” We paused, prayed together, and kept walking.

Several minutes later my wife, Cari, suddenly took a quick step backward, narrowly avoiding a poisonous copperhead partially coiled on the path ahead. We waited as the snake left the trail, giving it a wide berth. Then we paused and thanked God nothing had happened. I believe that through Allan’s question, God had prepared us for the encounter, and our prayer was part of His providential care.

Our brush with danger that evening brings to mind the importance of David’s words: “Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always” (1 CHRON. 16:11). This advice was part of a psalm celebrating the return of the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem. It recounts God’s faithfulness to His people in their struggles throughout history, reminding them to always praise Him and “cry out” to Him (V. 35).

What does it mean to “seek [God’s] face”? It means we turn our hearts toward Him in even the most mundane moments. Sometimes our prayers are answered differently than our asking, but God is faithful come what may. Our Good Shepherd will direct our paths and keeps us in His mercy, strength, and love. 값을 매길 수 없는 예배

나는 하나님을 경배하고 섬기기 위해 글을 쓰는데, 요즘은 건강 문제로 자주 거동이 불편하여 더 그렇게 합니다. 그런데 어떤 아는 사람이 내 글에 읽을 것이 별로 없다는 말을 하는 것을 듣고는 낙심이 되어, 하나님께 드리는 나의 이 작은 예물이 가치가 있는 것인지 의심이 되었습니다.

하지만 기도와 성경공부, 그리고 남편, 가족, 친구들의 격려를 통해, 주님은 다른 사람들의 의견이 아닌 오직 주님만이 예배드리는 우리의 동기와 주님께 드리는 예물의 가치를 결정하신다는 확신을 주셨습니다. 나는 모든 은사를 주신 주님께, 나의 기술을 개발하여 주님께서 주시는 모든 자원을 나눌 기회들을 달라고 간구하였습니다.

예수님은 우리가 드리는 것에 관한 가치 기준을 바꾸어놓으셨습니다(마가복음 12:41-44). 부자가 많은 돈을 성전 금고에 던져 넣을 때, 가난한 과부는 “단지 몇 전 가치 밖에 안 되는” 동전을 넣었습니다(42절). 과부의 헌금이 다른 사람들에 비해 하찮아 보여도(44절) 주님은 그녀의 예물이 다른 모든 것보다 더 크다고 말씀하셨습니다(43절).

과부의 이야기는 헌금에 초점이 맞추어져 있지만, 우리가 하나님께 드리는 모든 행위가 다 경배와 사랑에 의한 순종의 표현일 수 있습니다. 우리가 하나님으로부터 이미 받은 것이 무엇이든지, 그것으로부터 정성어리고 넉넉하고 희생적인 예물을 드림으로써 그 과부처럼 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수 있습니다. 우리가 사랑하는 마음으로 우리의 시간이나 재능이나 재물을 아낌없이 하나님께 드릴 때, 우리는 ‘값을 매길 수 없는 예배’라는 예물을 하나님께 아낌없이 드리는 것입니다.

Priceless Worship

I use writing to worship and serve God, even more so now that health issues often limit my mobility. So, when an acquaintance said he found no value in what I wrote, I became discouraged. I doubted the significance of my small offerings to God.

Through prayer, study of Scripture, and encouragement from my husband, family, and friends, the Lord affirmed that only He—not the opinions of other people—could determine our motives as a worshiper and the worth of our offerings to Him. I asked the Giver of all gifts to continue helping me develop skills and provide opportunities to share the resources He gives me.

Jesus contradicted our standards of merit regarding our giving (MARK 12:41–44). While the rich tossed large amounts of money into the temple treasury, a poor widow put in coins “worth only a few cents” (V. 42). The Lord declared her gift greater than the rest (V. 43), though her contribution seemed insignificant to those around her (V. 44).

Although the widow’s story focuses on financial offerings, every act of giving can be an expression of worship and loving obedience. Like the widow, we honor God with intentional, generous, and sacrificial gifts given from whatever He’s already given us. When we present God the best of our time, talents, or treasure with hearts motivated by love, we are lavishing Him with offerings of priceless worship. - XOCHITL DIXON

혼자 달리지 말라

우리 남편 잭이 경주의 26마일 코스 중 25마일 지점에 이르렀을때 힘이 다 빠져버렸습니다.

그것은 그의 생애 첫 마라톤이었는데, 남편 혼자 달리고 있었습니다. 급수대에서 물을 마시려고 잠시 멈춘 그는 매우 지쳐서 코스 옆 잔디 위에 앉았습니다. 그런데 몇 분이 지나도 일어설 수가 없었습니다. 그만 경주를 포기하려고
하는데 켄터키에서 온 중년 교사 두 명이 다가왔습니다. 모르는 사람들이었지만 그들은 잭의 상태를 알아보고 자기들과 함께 뛰지 않겠냐고 물었습니다. 잭은 갑자기 체력이 회복되는 것을 느끼고는, 일어나 두 여성과 함께 뛰어 경주를 마쳤습니다.

잭을 격려했던 두 여성은 아주 중요한 순간에 이스라엘 백성의 지도자 모세를 도왔던 두 친구 아론과 훌을 생각나게 합니다 (출애굽기 17:8-13). 이스라엘 백성들이 공격을 받고 있었는데, 모세가 그의 지팡이를 들고 있는 동안에만 전투에서 이겼습니다(11절). 그래서 아론과 훌은 모세의 체력이 소진했을 때 그의 양쪽에 서서 해가 지기까지 그의 팔을 들어주었습니다(12절).

하나님을 따르는 것은 혼자만의 노력으로 되지 않습니다. 하나님은 우리가 삶의 경주를 홀로 달리도록 창조하지 않으셨습니다. 우리가 하나님의 일을 하며 겪는 어려움을 견뎌내도록 동역자들이 도와줄 수 있습니다.

Don’t Run Alone

My husband Jack was on mile 25 out of 26 when his strength failed him.

This was his first marathon, and he was running alone. After stopping for a drink of water at an aid station, he felt exhausted and sat down on the grass beside the course. Minutes passed, and he couldn’t get up. He had resigned himself to quitting the race when two middle-aged school-teachers from Kentucky came by. Although they were strangers, they noticed Jack and asked if he wanted to run with them. Suddenly, he found his strength restored. Jack stood and accompanied by the two women he finished the race.

Those women who encouraged Jack remind me of Aaron and Hur, two friends who helped Moses, the leader of the Israelites, at a key point (EX. 17:8–13). The Israelites were under attack. In battle, they were winning only as long as Moses held his staff up (V. 11). So when Moses’s strength began to fail, Aaron and Hur stood on either side of him, holding up his arms for him until sunset (V. 12).

Following God is not a solo endeavor. He did not create us to run the race of life alone. Companions can help us persevere through difficulty as we do what God has called us to do. - AMY PETERSON

하나님이 하시는 새로운 일

“하나님이 당신의 삶에 새로운 어떤 일을 하고 계신가요?” 내가 최근에 참석했던 한 모임에서 리더가 던진 질문이었습니다. 몇몇 어려운 상황 가운데 있던 친구 민디가 대답했습니다. 그녀는 연로한 부모님을 위해서는 인내가, 남편의 건강 문제에 있어서는 체력이, 그리고 아직 예수님을 믿지 않는 자녀와 손자들을 위해서는 이해심이 필요하다고 말하고는, 우리가 보통 생각하는 것과 달리 이런 통찰력이 있는 말을 했습니다. “하나님은 지금 저에게 사람들을 사랑할 힘과 기회들을 더 넓히시는 일을 새로 하고 계신다고 믿어요.”

그것은 바울 사도가 데살로니가의 새 신자들을 위해 기도한 것과도 아주 잘 맞습니다. “주님께서 여러분끼리 나누는 사랑과 모든 사람에게 베푸는 여러분의 사랑을 풍성하게 하고, 넘치게 해 주시기를 빕니다”(데살로니가전서 3:12, 새번역). 바울은 그곳 사람들에게 예수님에 대해 가르쳤었지만 폭동이 일어나는 바람에 갑자기 떠나야만 했습니다 (사도행전 17:1-9). 그 후 그는 서신을 통해 그들에게 믿음에 계속 굳게 서 있으라고 권면했습니다(데살로니가전서 3:7-8). 그리고 그들이 모든 사람을 더욱 사랑할 수 있게 해달라고 주님께 기도하였습니다.

우리는 어려움에 부딪히면 “왜?”라고 불평 섞인 질문을 하거나 “왜 나에게?”라며 의문을 갖습니다. 이럴 때 다르게 대처하는 한 가지 방법은 우리 마음에 주님의 사랑이 자라나 다른 사람을 더 사랑할 수 있게 해달라고 주님께 간구하는 것입니다.

God’s Doing Something New

“Is God doing something new in your life?” was the question the leader asked in a group I was in recently. My friend Mindy, who is dealing with some difficult situations, responded. She told of needing patience with aging parents, stamina for her husband’s health issues, and understanding of her children and grandchildren who have not yet chosen to follow Jesus. Then she made an insightful comment that runs contrary to what we might normally think: “I believe the new thing God is doing is He’s expanding my capacity and opportunities to love.”

That fits nicely with the apostle Paul’s prayer for new believers in Thessalonica: “May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else” (1 THESS. 3:12). He had taught them about Jesus but had to leave abruptly because of rioting (ACTS 17:1–9). Now in his letter he encouraged them to continue to stand firm in their faith (1 THESS. 3:7–8). And he prayed that the Lord would increase their love for all.

During difficulties we often choose to complain and ask, Why ? Or wonder, Why me ? Another way to handle those times could be to ask the Lord to expand His love in our hearts and to help us take the new opportunities that come to love others. - ANNE CETAS

하나님의 찬란한 아름다움

로드호우 섬은 호주의 동쪽 연안에 있는 섬인데, 백사장과 수정 같이 맑은 물이 있는 작은 지상낙원 입니다. 몇 년 전 그곳을 방문했을 때 나는 그 아름다움에 완전히 반했습니다. 거기서는 거북이들과, 또 반짝거리는 전강이 같은 물고기들과 함께 헤엄칠 수 있고, 바로 옆에는 광고판처럼 네온색을 반짝이는 달 놀래기들이 떠 다녔습니다. 석호에 있는 산호초들에는 밝은 오렌지색의 흰동가리와 노란 줄무늬의 나비고기들이 가득하여 마치 내 손에 입 맞추려는 듯 달려들었습니다. 그 놀라운 장관에 감격하여 나는 하나님께 경배하지 않을 수 없었습니다.

내가 그렇게 반응하게 된 이유를 바울 사도가 설명해줍니다. 창조는 그것이 가장 최고조일 때 하나님 속성의 어떤 것을 드러냅니다(로마서 1:20). 로드호우 섬의 경이로운 모습은 하나님 그분의 능력과 아름다움을 살짝 보여주었습니다.

에스겔 선지자가 하나님을 뵈었을 때, 영광스러운 광채에 둘러싸여 푸른 보좌에 앉아 계신 사방으로 광채가 나는 존재를 보았습니다(에스겔 1:25-28). 요한 사도도 그와 비슷하게 녹보석 무지개에 둘러싸여 벽옥과 홍보석 같이 빛나는 하나님을 보았습니다(요한계시록 4:2-3). 하나님이 자신을 드러내실 때, 우리는 그분의 선하고 능력 있는 모습뿐 아니라, 아름다운 모습도 함께 보게 됩니다. 예술품이 그 작가를 반영해 보여주는 것과 같은 방식으로 창조물은 이러한 아름다움을 반영해 보여줍니다.

종종 자연이 하나님 대신 경배를 받기도 합니다(로마서 1:25). 얼마나 슬픈 일인지요. 그 대신, 지구상의 수정 같은 맑은 물과 반짝이는 생명체들이 우리에게 그것들 뒤에 계시는 한 분, 이 세상 어떤 것보다도 더 능력 있고 아름다운 분을 가리켜주길 바랍니다.

God’s Radiant Beauty

Lord Howe Island is a small paradise of white sands and crystal waters off Australia’s east coast. When I visited some years ago, I was struck by its beauty. Here, one could swim with turtles and with fish like the shimmering trevally, while moon wrasses drifted nearby, flashing their neon colors like a billboard. In its lagoon I found coral reefs full of bright orange clownfish and yellow-striped butterfly fish that rushed to kiss my hand. Overwhelmed by such splendor, I couldn’t help but worship God.

The apostle Paul gives the reason for my response. Creation at its best reveals something of God’s nature (ROM 1:20). The wonders of Lord Howe Island were giving me a glimpse of His own power and beauty.

When the prophet Ezekiel encountered God, he was shown a radiant Being seated on a blue throne surrounded by glorious colors (EZEK 1:25–28). The apostle John saw something similar: God sparkling like precious stones, encircled by an emerald rainbow (REV 4:2–3). When God reveals Himself, He is found to be not only good and powerful but beautiful too. Creation reflects this beauty the way a piece of art reflects its artist.

Nature often gets worshiped instead of God (ROM 1:25). What a tragedy. Instead, may earth’s crystal waters and shimmering creatures point us to the One standing behind them who is more powerful and beautiful than anything in this world. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

깨끗하게 됨

우리 집 식기 세척기를 열었을 때 무엇이 잘못 되었나 싶었습니다. 반짝이는 깨끗한 그릇들을 보는 대신, 나는 흰색의 먼지 가루들로 뒤덮인 접시와 유리잔들을 치웠습니다. 우리 지역의 센물이 문제를 일으킨 것인지, 아니면 식기 세척기가 고장난 것인지 알 수 없었습니다.

이렇게 불완전한 식기 세척기와는 달리, 하나님의 깨끗이 하심은 우리의 모든 불순물들을 다 씻어냅니다. 우리는 에스겔서에서, 에스겔이 하나님의 사랑과 용서의 메시지를 전할 때, 하나님께서 그의 백성들을 그분께로 다시 부르시고 있는 것을 봅니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 다른 신들과 다른 나라들을 섬기겠다고 맹세했을 때 이미 죄를 범했습니다. 그러나 하나님은 자비로 그들을 다시 그분께로 부르셨습니다. 하나님은 “[그들의] 모든 더러운 것에서와 모든 우상 숭배에서”(36:25) 그들을 청결하게 하겠다고 약속해주셨습니다. 하나님이 그분의 영을 그들 속에 두어서(27절) 기근이 아닌, 풍성한 소산이 있는 곳으로 그들을 이끄실 것이었습니다(30절).

에스겔 선지자 때처럼, 오늘도 주님은 우리가 잘못된 길로 가더라도 주님께로 돌아올 것을 기다리십니다. 주님의 뜻과 방법들에 우리가 복종할 때, 주님은 우리의 죄를 깨끗이 씻어주심으로 우리를 변화시켜주십니다. 우리 안에 거하시는 주님의 성령과 함께, 주님은 우리가 날마다 주님을 따를 수 있게 도와주십니다.

주 하나님, 깨끗하게 되고 용서 받았다는 느낌은 다른 어느 것과도 같지 않습니다. 저를 새 사람으로 변화시켜주시니 감사합니다. 주님께 매일 순종하도록 가르쳐주셔서 제가 더욱 더 예수님을 닮은 모습으로 자라가게 해주소서.

주님은 우리를 깨끗하게 해주신다.

Made Clean

When I opened our dishwasher, I wondered what went wrong. Instead of seeing sparkling clean dishes, I removed plates and glasses that were covered in a chalky dust. I wondered if the hard water in our area was wreaking havoc, or if the machine was broken.

God’s cleansing, unlike that faulty dishwasher, washes away all of our impurities. We see in the book of Ezekiel that God is calling His people back to Himself as Ezekiel shared God’s message of love and forgiveness. The Israelites had sinned as they proclaimed their allegiance to other gods and other nations. The Lord, however, was merciful in welcoming them back to Himself. He promised to cleanse them “from all [their] impurities and all [their] idols” (36:25). As He put His Spirit in them (V 27), He would bring them to a place of fruitfulness, not famine (V 30).

As in the days of the prophet Ezekiel, today the Lord welcomes us back to Him if we go astray. When we submit ourselves to His will and His ways, He transforms us as He washes
us clean from our sins. With His Holy Spirit dwelling within us, He helps us to follow Him day by day. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

차고 넘치는 열매

봄과 여름 동안 나는 이웃집 뜰에서 자라는 과일들을 보며 감탄해마지 않습니다. 이웃이 심은 포도넝쿨은 두 집 사이의 담장을 타고 올라 커다란 포도송이들을 맺습니다. 자주색의 자두와 토실한 오렌지가 열린 가지들이 바로 손에 잡힐 듯 가까이 매달려 있습니다.

우리는 땅을 갈지도 않 고 , 씨를 뿌리거나, 물을 주거나, 정원의 잡초를 제거하지도 않지만, 이웃집 부부는 우리에게 그들이 수확한 것들을 나누어줍니다. 그들은 경작물을 재배하는 일에 책임을 지면서도 수확한 것의 일부를 나누어줌으로써 우리에게 기쁨을 나눠줍니다.

우리 담장 너머의 나무와 포도넝쿨에서 수확되는 과일들은 나에게, 그리고 하나님이 내 인생에 두신 사람들에게 유익을 주는 또 다른 수확을 생각나게 해줍니다. 그것은 성령의 열매를 거두는 수확입니다.

그리스도를 따르는 자들은 성령의 능력으로 사는 유익을 누리라고 하셨습니다(갈라디아서 5:16-21). 하나님의 진리의 씨앗들이 우리 마음속에서 자라갈 때, 성령님은 “사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래
참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과 온유와 절제”(22-23 절)를 표현할 수 있는 우리의 능력을 더 크게 만들어주십니다.

한번 우리 삶을 예수님께 복종시키고 나면, 우리는 더 이상 우리 자신의 정욕에 이끌려 지내지 않아도 됩니다(24절). 시간이 지날수록 성령께서 우리의 생각과 태도, 행동을 바꾸어 주십니다. 우리가 그리스도 안에서 성장하고 성숙해갈 때, 하나님의 자비로운 수확의 유익들을 이웃들과 함께 나눔으로써 그들을 사랑하는 기쁨도 함께 얻을 수 있습니다.

Overflowing Fruit

During the spring and summer, I admire the fruit growing in our neighbor’s yard. Their cultivated vines climb a shared fence to produce large bunches of grapes. Branches dotted with purple plums and plump oranges dangle just within our reach.

Although we don’t till the soil, plant the seeds, or water and weed the garden, the couple next door shares their bounty with us. They take responsibility for nurturing their crops and allow us to delight in a portion of their harvest.

The produce from the trees and vines on the other side of our fence reminds me of another harvest that benefits me and the people God places in my life. That harvest is the fruit of the Spirit.

Christ-followers are commissioned to claim the benefits of living by the power of the Holy Spirit (GAL 5:16–21). As God’s seeds of truth flourish in our hearts, the Spirit produces an increase in our ability to express “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (VV 22–23).

Once we surrender our lives to Jesus, we no longer have to be controlled by our self-centered inclinations (V 24). Over time, the Holy Spirit can change our thinking, our attitudes, and our actions. As we grow and mature in Christ, we can have the added joy of loving our neighbors by sharing the benefits of His generous harvest. - XOCHITL DIXON

주의를 기울여라

존 뉴턴은 “내가 집에 가는데, 어떤 아이가 반 페니 동전을 떨어뜨렸다면, 그래서 다른 동전을 줘서 그의 울음을 멈추었다면, 나는 뭔가를 한 것 같은 느낌이 들 것입니다. 아주 즐거이 더 대단한 일들을 하겠지만, 나는 이것도 소홀히 하지 않겠습니다.”라고 썼습니다.

요즘은 편안함이 필요한 사람을 찾기가 어렵지 않습니다. 적자를 면하기 위해 두 가지 일을 하며 근심에 시달리는 식료품점 점원. 살 집을 간절히 바라는 난민. 걱정의 홍수로 희망마저 씻겨나간 혼자서 아이를 키우는 미혼모. 너무 오래 살아 이제 필요 없어졌다고 불안해하는 외로운 노인.

그러면 우리는 무엇을 해야 할까요? 다윗은 “가난한 자를 보살피는 자에게 복이 있음이여”(시편 41:1)라고 썼습니다. 비록 우리가 도처에서 만나는 사람들의 가난을 덜어줄 수는 없다 하더라도, 우리는 그들을 배려할 수는 있습니다. 배려한다는 말은 “주의를 기울인다”는 의미의 동사입니다.

우리는 우리가 돌본다는 것을 사람들에게 알릴 수 있습니다. 그들이 짜증나거나 성가실지라도 우리는 예의와 존중으로 그들을 대할 수 있습니다. 그들의 이야기에 관심을 가지고 들을 수 있고, 그들을 위해서 혹은 그들과 같이 기도할 수 있습니다. 기도는 무엇보다도 가장 도움이 되고 치유가 되는 행동입니다.

예수님이 우리에게 주신 오래된 역설적인 문구인 “주는 것이 받는 것보다 복이 있다”(사도행전 20:35)라는 말씀을 기억하십시오. 우리 자신을 내어줄 때 우리가 무엇보다도 행복하기 때문에, 주의를 기울여주는 것은 이미 그 자체로 충분합니다. 가난한 사람들을 배려하십시오.

Paying Attention

John Newton wrote, “If, as I go home, a child has dropped a halfpenny, and if, by giving it another, I can wipe away its tears, I feel I have done something. I should be glad to do greater things; but I will not neglect this.

” These days, it’s not hard to find someone in need of comfort: A care-worn cashier in a grocery store working a second job to make ends meet; a refugee longing for home; a single mother whose flood of worries has washed away her hope; a lonely old man who fears he has outlived his usefulness.

But what are we to do? “Blessed is he who considers the poor,” wrote David (PS 41:1 NKJV ). Even if we can’t alleviate the poverty of those we meet along the way we can consider them—a verb that means “to pay attention.”

We can let people know we care. We can treat them with courtesy and respect, though they may be testy or tiresome. We can listen with interest to their stories. And we can pray for them or with them—the most helpful and healing act of all.

Remember the old paradox Jesus gave us when He said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (ACTS 20:35). Paying attention pays off, for we’re happiest when we give ourselves away. Consider the poor. - DAVID ROPER

열심히 찾음

매주 토요일 우리 가족은 고등학교 크로스컨트리 팀에서 달리기를 하는 우리 딸을 응원하려고 경주 코스 옆에 줄을 섭니다. 결승선을 통과한 선수들은 자신들의 팀원, 코치, 부모들과 합류하기 위해 빠져나갑니다. 300명이 넘는 관중들이 결승선을 지난 선수들을 에워싸고 있어서, 그 많은 사람들 중에 한 사람을 찾기란 정말 힘이 듭니다. 우리는 군중들을 열심히 훑어보고 나서 마침내 딸을 찾아낸 후, 우리가 보러온 ‘한 명의’ 운동선수, 우리가 아주 많이 사랑하는 우리 딸을 품에 꼭 안습니다.

바벨론에서의 70년간의 포로생활 후, 하나님은 유대인들을 예루살렘과 유다로 다시 돌아오게 하셨습니다. 이사야는 그들을 향한 하나님의 기쁨과, 다시 본향으로 돌아오는 길과 또 그들을 맞이할 문들을 준비하시는 하나님의 사역에 대해 묘사하고 있습니다. 하나님은 그들을 그분의 거룩한 백성으로 다시 확인하여 부르시며, “찾은 바 된 자요 버림 받지 아니한 성읍” (이사야 62:12)이라는 새로운 이름으로 그들의 명예를 회복시켜주십니다. 하나님은 바벨론의 흩어진 곳곳에서 그들 모두를 찾아내시고 하나님 그분께로 돌아오게 하셨습니다.

Earnestly Searching

Every Saturday our family lines the edges of the racecourse to cheer on my daughter as she runs with her high school cross-country team. After crossing the finish line, the athletes stream out to rejoin their teammates, coaches, and parents. Crowds engulf the finishers—often more than 300 of them—making it difficult to find one person among so many. We scan the crowd excitedly until we find her, eager to put our arms around the one athlete we came to watch: our much-loved daughter.

After seventy years of captivity in Babylon, God returned the Jews to Jerusalem and Judah. Isaiah describes the delight God has in them, and the work of preparing the highways for their pilgrimage home and the gates to receive them back. God reaffirms His calling of them as His holy people and restores their honor with a new name, “Sought After, the City No Longer Deserted” (ISA 62:12). He sought them all from the scattered reaches of Babylon to bring them back to Himself.

Like the children of Israel, we too are God’s beloved children, earnestly sought after by Him. Though our sin once caused us isolation from Him, Jesus’s sacrifice paves our way back to Him. He searches for each of us intently among all the others, waiting expectantly to fold us into a heartfelt embrace. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG
